Growing up in South Africa, it always felt as
if I was Dutch. Then I moved to Holland and my blood turned green with
South Africanism. So I guess I a Dutch-South African, or is it South
African-Dutchman? This dilemma has always been bothering me, so finally
after 22 years I have come to a conclusion. I am Roeland. Nothing more,
nothing less.
I was born in Johannesburg in 1988, but before I was 4 months old, I
had breathed the manure filled air of a small little village called
Zeist, in the province of Utrecht. For the next 14 years or so Zeist
was all I knew of the Netherlands.
After finishing high school, I decided to become a professional
beach-bum and completed my coastal skippers course. Next, I spent 6
months travelling through the south of France, and ended up on a 35Mtr
Mega Yacht…
Then I returned back to reality and applied for Hotelschool The Hague.
To my surprise I was accepted… in the Amsterdam branch.
Practical Placement was my next “big” adventure, little did
I know.
I survived 6 months onboard the MY Silver Shadow of Silversea Cruises,
working minimum 100 hours per week. I loved every second of it. I
travelled to 28 different countries, and visited many places I would
not have been able to see if I had done anything “normal”
After my internship I had to get closer to the ocean, and applied to
transfer to The Hague branch.
Once I was accepted into The Hague, I ended up at my first Kinderbar,
where I was warmly welcomed. By my second Kinderbar I was a member!
If you ever come across me and I don’t know your name then I will
make it my personal mission to remember it! Its my personal little
mission to try and remember every person I meet.
If you don’t know who I am?? Then you can find me at Kinderbar
every week
tapping beers, and making sure that everyone is well
“lubricated.”
